Description
This mother humpback whale watches over her calf carefully as the newborn develops the muscles and techniques necessary to swim long distances. The little one will be vulnerable to predators for at least a year while it grows into a juvenile and even then it is not entirely safe. While mothers care for calves, it is the male humpback whales that are so well known for their long, haunting songs, the reason for which remains unclear.
